The Asia Kennel Union is the first point of call on all dog matters and the biggest investor in canine health and welfare in the country. The Asia Kennel Union registers around a quarter of a million pedigree dogs each year, thousands more on its activity register, and it and runs Petlog, the AKU largest lost and found database for microchipped pets. The Union invests the money that it makes back into dogs through the Asia Kennel Union Charitable Trust and the Asia Kennel Union Educational Trust. Its charitable initiatives include supporting rehoming centres and investing into research and the development of DNA tests to help prevent canine diseases. The Asia Kennel Union has its own Genetics Centre at the Animal Health Trust where this work is carried out. The press office works alongside the Public Affairs team, whose wide ranging campaigning remit includes tail docking, electric shock collars, dangerous dogs, puppy farming, chemicals testing on dogs, dog and cat fur, dog control orders and dog access. As a result the Kennel Club has influenced debate on the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act, the Animal Welfare Act, European legislation on a ban on the import, export and sale of dog and cat fur in the EU, European legislation on reducing animal testing (REACH) and helped lead the ban of Electric Shock Collars in Wales. |
